The Swedish ceramic artist Erik Engqvist was born in Råå, a scenic fishing village in the Skåne region of southern Sweden.

He initially worked as a firefighter for the Helsingborg fire department starting in 1948 while pursuing art as a passionate hobby.

In the 1950s, he transitioned to pottery full-time and joined the prominent Swedish company Jie Gantofta (also known as Jie Keramik). It was during this period that he designed his highly collectible, stylized stoneware bird figurines known for their smooth shapes and unique fluid glazes.

By the late 1950s, he opened his own workshop, the Råå Keramikverkstad, where his style evolved to include heavier, more powerful sculptures of local fishermen, owls, and marine life.
